A walk for veterans – What do you think?

October 31, 2012

To the Editor:

My name is Sergeant First Class Michael Blake, and I am an active duty US Army Reconnaissance Section Leader, stationed in Fort Hood Texas, I have 16 years of service and six operational deployments (four of which to Iraq).

I am moving back to the Vineyard this spring and wanted to hold a perimeter hike of the Island for combat veterans to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project and Soldiers Angels, two very thorough and effective veterans charities. It would be a two and a half day event with under 50 participants. I wanted the Island's feedback, to see if an event like this could take place and who would support it. I'm thinking sometime in May or mid-June would be a good time to do it.

Not only is it a great way to get to know some of our nation's combat veterans, but it is also an opportunity for those who served to get a chance to enjoy the Island's natural beauty. Any feedback would be appreciated, and I can be reached via email at reconareef@gmail.com. Thank your or your time.
