GPS course offered for mariners

The Martha’s Vineyard Detachment of the Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer a two-week GPS for mariners course beginning Wednesday, November 28, 2012. The course will meet Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 pm through December 5, 2012 at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School.

This in-depth course focuses on the GPS equipment typically owned by recreational boaters. Course participants who already own hand-held GPS units are invited to bring them to the class. GPS units will be available for those who do not own one. This course will involve students in an interactive experience, with a goal of providing each participant with the knowledge and skills to use a GPS for practical recreational boating.

Pre-registration is required for admission. Additional information and reservation of space in the GPS for Mariners class may be obtained by calling Chris Scott, Auxiliary Instructor, at 774-930-0921. While the instruction is free, there is a $40 fee to cover the costs of the textbook, chart and materials used in the course.
