Noteworthy events on Martha's Vineyard
This Thursday, Nov. 8, The Pit Stop hosts a concert that will benefit those affected by Hurricane Sandy. Performing are Brad Tucker, Adam Howell and Angel, and Alex Karalekas. The show starts at 8 pm, and a donation of $5-$10 is appreciated.
Explore Katama Farm
The Vineyard Conservation Society kicks off its guided winter walks this Sunday, Nov. 11, with an interpretative hike around the agricultural land and outwash plain at Katama Farm in Edgartown. Walkers will gather at The FARM Institute parking lot near the barn.
Bob Woodruff, who helped facilitate the Katama conservation outcome more than 30 years ago, will co-lead the walk. For more information, call 508-693-9588.
Winter Walks commence
On the second Saturday of each month through March, join the staff at Polly Hill Arboretum in West Tisbury for a guided walk around the property. Tours are at 10 am, free, run for a little over an hour, and are scheduled for November 12, December 10, January 14, February 11, and March 10. Sense of Wonder
After a busy summer season, Pam Benjamin's Sense of Wonder Creations Studio art classes for children resume from November through May. Spots are available in the after-school sessions for ages 5 to 14, where children work on sculpture, printmaking, art history, painting, drawing, and more. All things swine
Coming up next week is a four-day class all about pork (from breaking it down to making paté), that culminates with a weekend-long event called Swine & Dine where guests will be treated to a variety of pork dishes.
Porks & Knives is the instructional part of the event. Salumi maker and butcher Francois Vecchio will teach participants how to break down a pig, make sausage, cure meat, and create paté, from November 13 through 18. Classes are $300/day with combination specials available if one is interested in participating in more than one class.
Swine & Dine, November 16 through 18 at a variety of events: Pig Out with Local Smoke on Friday, Nov. 16; take a farm tour, enjoy the BLT Bonanza, a competition among local chefs, or a five-course dinner on November 17. The weekend ends with Sunday brunch. All Swine & Dine events are at the Harbor View Hotel in Edgartown, except the farm tour.
