Oak Bluffs

Vineyard Avenue has changed from when I first met so many of the residents back in the 50s. Then the names were so familiar, and the people united in their Portuguese heritage. So we will not forget those faces from the past, we remember those who once resided on “Chicken Street,” as it was fondly called. Gone now are Elvira and Gus BenDavid, Arthur and Stella BenDavid, Betty Alley, Ruth Fischer, Phil Combra, “Doc Chick” Combra, Celia Silva, Fanny and Frank Simmons, Rita Frietas, Tony Alley, Gus Amaral and now last week one of the last of the group, Betty Rose, passed away. Condolences to her family and friends who were many. How we miss them all but memories of their humor and caring go on forever.

Here’s your chance to help out an Island organization and enjoy a great dinner at the same time. On November 10, Cat Trap of M.V. will sponsor a spaghetti dinner at the P-A Club in Oak Bluffs from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. If you are not familiar with the mission of Cat Trap, let me fill you in on some recent activities of this helpful organization. Recently they were instrumental in trapping over 50 cats on the property of one owner in Aquinnah. They were able to neuter over 38 cats and place 23 kittens in foster care. It would have been impossible to achieve this without donations from so many people. You may purchase tickets for the supper at Healthy Additions in Vineyard Haven, Good Dog Goods in Oak Bluffs, or the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard in Edgartown. Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for children. Please do not forget our veterans on November 11, Veterans Day. The American Legion in Vineyard Haven never forgets them and on Memorial Day and Veterans Day they erect more than 425 flags in their memory in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Vineyard Haven. They could really use some help at 7:30 am that day to help put the flags up and then again at 3 pm when it is time to take them down.

A pie sale to Benefit the Oak Bluffs School 8th Grade Philly Trip will feature delicious apple and pumpkin pies baked at the Tisbury Farm Market. The cost is $16.99 for one pie, $30 for two pies. Pie orders must be placed by Thursday, November 15. Pies will be available for pick-up on Tuesday, November 20, after school, in the Oak Bluffs School Cafeteria. Pies are boxed and labeled, perfect for travel, giving, and of course, eating.School will be closed November 12 for the Veterans Day Holiday.

Save November 16, 17, and 18 for the always entertaining Oak Bluffs School Play.

The American Legion Auxiliary is having their annual Thanksgiving/Christmas bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 10 am to 1 pm at the Legion Hall, 47 Martin Road, Vineyard Haven. There will be raffles, a country store table, white elephant, and lots of baked goods. Come and enjoy some early Christmas shopping and pick up a Thanksgiving pie!

The Chamber Music Society wishes to remind you that their Thanksgiving concert is scheduled for Saturday, November 24, with acclaimed musicians Hye-Jin Kim, Scott Woolweaver, Ronald Lowry, and Delores Stevens performing music by Chopin, Hummel, Korngold, and Saint-Saens.

On Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 7 pm, the Federated Church in Edgartown will host a very special Trunk Show of West African fabrics with Carol Christensen, who, with her husband, the Reverend David Christensen, travels often to Ghana as a missionary. The fabrics are unique and colorful in design. Carol will be available for questions. All proceeds from fabric sales will go directly to the mission in Ghana. There is no charge; refreshments will be served. For more information, call Mary-Jean Miner, 508-696-8589.The Island fared well throughout the storm on Monday and Tuesday. How lucky were we as NSTAR and emergency and highway personnel restored power and roadways so quickly. Thank you all.

Now let’s not forget our neighbors in New Jersey and New York who suffered greatly with loss of life and material goods. You will find many areas where you can help and Cronig’s in Vineyard Haven is collecting gently used jackets and blankets for citizens there. Can you imagine trying to survive in this cold weather without housing, jackets, or heat?
