Neither rain nor wind keeps Island duplicate bridge players from the game.
On Thursday, November 8, at the Island Bridge Club (IBC) game 20 players were on hand. Gail Farrish and her partner Patsy McCornack took first place with a 64.35 percent average game. Bea Phear and Cecily Greenaway were in second place (58.33 percent average game) and Ency Fokos and Gerry Averill took third place (57.41 percent average).
On Tuesday, Nov. 6, at the Martha’s Vineyard Bridge Club (MVBC), it was a dead heat for a first-place finish among the 14 players on hand. Tied for first were the teams of David Donald/Michel Riel and Barbara Besse/Bob Iadicicco with 58.33 percent average games. Third place finishers were Gail Farrish and Patsy McCornack with a 56.94 percent average game finish.
For many years, bridge players used the Blackwood method (a bid of 4NT) to ask partner how many aces partner holds when the partnership is considering bidding a slam. However, there are now several modern variations on this ace-asking system. Life Master Mollie Whalen, explains the new “30-14” and “14-30” responses to the 4NT bid (asking for aces).
“Some partnerships agree that a 5 Club response to 4NT should show 3 or 0 aces while 5 Diamonds shows 1 or 4 aces (remember this as ’30-14′). But many modern partnerships prefer the reverse (’14-30′) showing 1 or 4 aces for 5 clubs and 3 or 0 aces for 5 Diamonds since, if you only have one ace, the key to a slam bid may rest on whether the partnership has a queen of the agreed-upon trump suit. So if responder bids 5 Clubs, showing 1 or 4 aces, partner can bid 5 Diamonds to ask about the queen of trump. Then 5 Hearst would say ‘no’ to holding the queen of trump and 5 Spades would say ‘yes.'”
