Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! If you are travelling I hope your roads are smooth and uncongested, and if you are staying put I hope you are surrounded by people you love. Welcome to all the people visiting the Island this weekend, we actually like it when you visit this time of year as compared to August when we can all be a little surly towards visitors.

The exceptional Mollie Doyle will teach a free yoga class Thanksgiving morning from 9 to 10:30 am at the Yoga Collective (at co-housing) in West Tisbury. This is a great way to start the marathon of excess that Thanksgiving can be. Donations for the food pantry will be accepted.

There are some artist open studios happening this weekend. Joanie LeLacheur will be hosting one at her house on Old South Road this Saturday from 10-5; Joanie will be selling her wampum jewelry. Also showing there will be the very talented garment designer, Minor Knight. Call Joanie at 508-645-9954 for directions.

Wendy Weldon of Chilmark is selling her paintings, monotypes, drawings, and gicleés out of her art studio in Chilmark over Thanksgiving weekend. From 11 am to 4 pm on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 23 and 24 or by appointment, she welcomes visitors and collectors to her studio. She has beautiful canvases and paintings on paper, spanning many years of creating art. For directions, please email her at or call her at 508- 645-3199.

And if you did overindulge over Thanksgiving (really… who doesn’t?) Cathy Garfinkle is offering a Restorative Yoga Workshop on Saturday, Nov. 24, from 3 to 5:30 pm at The Yoga Barn. There is a $35 fee and pre-registration is required, but half of the proceeds go to the Vineyard Committee on Hunger. Contact Cat Garfinkle at 508-693-1403 or for all the details.

Saskia and David Vanderhoop and their group Sassafras have some upcoming events for families. The first is Sunday, Dec. 2, from 1 to 3 pm at the tipi on their property. This is for families of young children who would like to learn more about nature and the outdoors. There will be games, songs and exploring. The price is $25 for each family.

Sassafras will also be holding a winter solstice all day/evening long event on Friday, Dec. 21. There will be a fire going out doors and a potluck. Contributions of food and/or firewood are welcome. Call Saskia at 508-645-2008 for all the details.

The Gerhards had a wonderful month travelling together in Spain. They were there for a month and rented a car and drove all over. It seems that little Sasha (almost six) is a born traveler and a good companion on the road.

The Friends of the Aquinnah library and the general population of Aquinnah gave Cathy Thompson a great send-off last Tuesday. Cathy would like to thank the Aquinnah community for the opportunity to serve everyone for two and a half happy years. She said, “The community is such a precious and special one. I’m grateful to the community, its leaders, the library trustees and staff, FAPL, and AGHCA for their generous support in achieving our goals of new technology and CLAMS membership. Many thanks.”

Cathy was a huge motivator in updating the library and linking to the other libraries on the Cape. I will miss Cathy a lot but I also would like to welcome our new director, Lisa Sherman from Edgartown who has been the interim director at the Edgartown Library. I can’t wait to get to know her and see what unique perspective she brings to our little hub.
