Fifty M.V. Harley Riders saddled up Sunday for the 24th annual Red Stocking Run around the Island, to collect money and toys for the Island charity that gives food, clothing, and toys to children in need at holiday time.

The riders who braved a chilly, windy day to collected $16,968, plus the toys. Contributions came from retailers, friends, and families, according to Rene Mathieu of Oak Bluffs, president of the motorcycle club. He said that the club has been soliciting donations since September.

The Red Stocking is funded by donations from individual Islanders and businesses and by three major events — the Big Chili Contest held every year in January at the Portuguese-American Club, the Chowder Contest held during Christmas in Edgartown during the second week in December, and the Red Stocking Run.
