A friend was teasing me for hanging Christmas lights before Thanksgiving, but I explained my rationale: it was 55 degrees out the Tuesday before Turkey Day, and knowing my luck, I’d come back from my holiday travels to find the temperature not quite so mild. Right I was! Now those puppies will be staying up until one of those freakishly warm days in March.

Nutcracker time is here, with performances on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 7 pm and Sunday, Dec. 2, at 2 pm at the Performing Arts Center at the high school, presented by Children In The Arts of Martha’s Vineyard together with Atlantic Coast Ballet. This will be the 15th year the Nutcracker Gala has graced the Vineyard stage. Our very own Nutcracker Gala provides an excellent opportunity for young and old alike to experience the world of ballet and live theater right here on Martha’s Vineyard. Let’s send a special shout-out to our Edgartown dancers: Alexis Condon (who will play Clara in the Sunday performance), Mackenzie Condon, Carlene Gatting, Jeffrey Enos, Ava Thors, Hannah Murphy, Tatum Thomas, Evelyn Davis Brewer, Angelina Campbell, Raven McCormick, Piper Oskan, Lauren Oskan, George Oskan, Julie Olsen, Katelyn Tankersley, Margaret Knight, and Sidney Morris. Break a leg!

All you can eat wings for a good cause? That’s right, this Saturday, Dec. 1, Sharky’s Edgartown will host the 4th annual Wingfest to benefit the Boys and Girls Club. Come for the wings and stay for the spectacle as the Edgartown Fire Department defends their title for Best Wings, the booths duke it out for the best design, and one lucky winner will be crowned in the wing-eating contest. The event takes place from noon to 4 pm. Visit mvbgclub.org/wingfest for more details and for advance tickets.

Felix Neck will host a Full Moon Owl Prowl on
Friday, Nov. 30, from 6 to 7:30 pm. You can beg the question “Hoo’s out there?” Owls silently fly through our island woods and fields. Join the group for a full moon walk to look, listen, and learn about these nocturnal birds. Observe resident barn owls on the owl cam and perhaps out on the trails, then warm up with hot chocolate and tea at the Nature Center.

Birthday wishes go out to John Morgan on November 29, to Willie Bailey and Mark Smadbeck on December 1, and to Thayer Whipple on December 4. Hope you have a great day.
