If there is such a thing as runners having a home course advantage, the 2012 Turkey Trot 5K road race was a classic case. Cottage City runners swept the top four positions of 276 on a temperate Thanksgiving morning in Oak Bluffs. Six finished in the first dozen. Eleven runners from across the Island placed in the top 20.

Jonevan Hornsby set a brisk pace and won the race in 16:24. Corey Looman (17:07) was the race runner-up. Next were Jose Alves (17:30) and Artie Smith (17:48). Ben Gersch of Bethesda, Md., was fifth (17:58).

Rounding out the top ten were Gregory Berks, Vineyard Haven, (18:08); Thomas Stackpole, West Tisbury, (18:54); Lucas Guoirski, Fairfield, Conn., (19:04); Reaan Steenkamp, V.H., (19:38); and the first woman to finish, Audrey Batista Vieira of Lexington, (19:55).

Cottage City dwellers Paul Vertefeuille (20:02) and Gregory Loonan (20:10) were 11th and 12th. Bonnie Kingsbury of Edgartown was the first Vineyard woman to cross the finish line and placed 13th.

The next ten Islanders were: MVRHS cross-country and track coach Joe Schroeder, W.T., (21:15, 17th); Bryan Garrison, V.H., (21:59, 21st); Patrick Parker, O.B., (22:00, 22nd); Michael Klein, Edg., (23:00, 29th); Peter Rodegast, W.T., (24:05, 37th); Kim Garrison, V.H., (24:30, 42nd); Nevin Wallis, O.B., (24:46, 44th); Dana Gaines, Edg., (24:59, 49th); Adam Smith, Edg., (25:00, 50th); Mason Jeffers, O.B., (25:00, 51st).
