Club treasurer Cliff Meehan (right) awarded the Top Gun plaque to repeat champ Richard Carlson.

In a prelude to the two-week shotgun season that began Monday, Island shotgunners competed Sunday in the Martha's Vineyard Rod and Gun Club's Fall Shoot.

Richard Carlson of Oak Bluffs bested 21 challengers and repeated as Top Gun for the second consecutive year. Past top gun Cooper Gilkes III took second place. Mike Ferry captured third.

Participants competed in three categories: a standing deer target shoot, a bull's-eye target, and skeet. A change in scoring rules allowed those competitors that chose to do so to repeatedly sign up in each separate category and choose their highest score.

Prizes were also awarded to Mike Ferry (bull's-eye); Dick Carlson (over the shoulder skeet); and Matt Cromwell (standing deer).

Shooters won canned hams donated by Cronig's Market.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported that Matt Gamache took the standing deer prize.
