The Portuguese-American Club in Oak Bluffs has become generosity central for fundraising success for important causes, big and small. Nearly $100,000 has been raised in several events this fall. Friday, Jim Moore of Vineyard Haven was the beneficiary.
More than 400 people came out to support Mr. Moore, who was recently diagnosed with a recurrence of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the central nervous system and associated brain tumors.
Mr. Moore attended the event with his wife, Shannon, and his children, Cameron, Matthew, and Michael.
The event raised more than $50,000 for the Moore family, $36,000 alone from a live auction in which more than 60 items were up for bid. A St. Croix golf vacation package and a new Navien condensing combination gas boiler/water heater were the big draws, fetching bids of $2,200 each.
Jack Law was the auctioneer, helped by his wife, Pat, P-A Club president Tricia Bergeron, and Oak Bluffs School teacher Jeannie Holenko. John Murray, Natalie Krauthammer, Amy Coffey, and Shelly O' Neil were the event organizers.
The evening began with a silent auction. Chef Albert Lattanzi donated his time, along with Bob O' Neill, Paul Sardini, and Paul Beeson to prepare a variety of appetizers.
The P-A Club, Island Food Products, Cakes By Liz, Chef Tony Saccoccia, Cash and Carry, DJ Paul Donnelly, and many other Islanders donated their time and products to the event.
Donations by check can be made directly to the Moore family at 25A Irene's Way, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568. Checks should be made payable to "Jim and Shannon Moore."
