The Daytrippers, the Vineyard's Beatles tribute band, are performing in A Night of Beatles Music & Film at Martha's Vineyard Film Center in Vineyard Haven, Saturday at 7:30 pm, utilizing the theater's state-of-the-art surround sound. Also, a 30-minute Beatles documentary will be screened before the concert. All proceeds will benefit the Martha's Vineyard Film Society and the new Film Center.
The band will cover songs that range across the entire spectrum of Beatles music, including some that were never performed live by the Fab Four.
Those who grew up in the 60s with the Beatles matured as did the band's music from their early teen love lyrics to introspective songs about religion, politics, and the nature of consciousness, from "She Loves You" and "I Want to Hold your Hand," to "I Am The Walrus."
The Daytrippers are a group of seasoned musicians who have put together a band that is as much fun to watch as they are to listen to. The six-member group is composed of Vineyard teachers and musicians. The core group includes Brian Weiland, Shelagh Smilie, Doug Brush, Eric Johnson, Boaz Kirschenbaum, and Charlie Esposito. Occasional guest musicians are not unusual.
The band has researched and orchestrated performances of the trendsetting, iconic, Liverpool-based, 60s group's music. Tube amplifiers and vintage guitars from the 60s are used along with modern keyboards to approximate the sounds of some of the recorded work.
To date, The Daytrippers concerts have been few and far between. All their performances have been for fundraisers. They have performed in concert at the Performing Arts Center for the high school music department, Island Grown Initiative for its Island Grown Schools program, and at a benefit at the YMCA of M.V. to benefit its new teen center.
