Edgartown police cited two drivers following a collision Thursday morning at the intersection of Edgartown-West Tisbury Road and Barnes Road in Edgartown. Police said speed was a factor in the two-car accident.

Daniel Haggerty, 27, of Edgartown, was driving a Subaru SUV and traveling up-Island on Edgartown-West Tisbury Road when he collided with a Toyota sedan driven by Molly Bennett, 57, of Chilmark, who was traveling down-Island and attempted to turn onto Barnes Road, according to police.

Ms. Bennett was taken by ambulance to the Martha's Vineyard Hospital.

Edgartown police cited Mr. Haggerty for speeding. The speed limit at that point in the road is 35 miles per hour.

"There were statements from witnesses he had passed a couple of vehicles before the accident," Officer Michael Gazaille said. "Certainly that was a factor in writing the speeding ticket."

Ms. Bennett was cited for failure to use caution at an intersection.

There was extensive damage to the rear passenger side of Ms. Bennett's car. The rear axle was knocked off the vehicle, according to police. There was also damage to the front of Mr. Haggerty's vehicle.
