We spent our holidays in Virginia. There was not much snow and the temperature range was about 2 degrees warmer than the Vineyard. We also had brisk breezes and some rain that I was happy did not need to be shoveled. A friend’s holiday card from Florida featured a palm tree with lights and soft waves lapping at the shore — much too warm for us. We did not run into icy walkways until we got back to New England. We did not miss them either. Even so, it is good to be home.

You might want to ask your congressman: why don’t children of congressmen have to pay back their college student loans? Even the staffers of congressmen are exempt from having to pay off student loans. You and your children support these loans and pay the taxes to cover the losses.

Happy New Year. Are you sticking to your New Year’s resolutions? Even if you are not, you know you are doing better than our congress. Do you think they even pretend to understand why we elect them?

Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out tomorrow to Romeo Bonelli. Wish the best on Saturday to Roberta Kirn. Sunday belongs to Taylor Higgins. Happy birthday on Tuesday to Judy Belushi Pisano, Allyson Wajda, and Ned Orleans.

Heard on Main Street: Life isn’t about how to survive the storm but how to dance in the rain — or the snow.
