I know some people may be complaining about the snow and the cold, but I find that this has been the most fun winter we’ve had in a while. There has been a lot of sledding, this past weekend many of the ponds froze and kids and adults were skating and sliding on the pond behind the library. The snow has also changed the monotony of gray that we get in the winter and it was fortuitous that the snow has coincided with the full moon making for some beautiful winter evenings.
This past Saturday, Mimi Trimmer hosted a celebratory dinner for Buddy Vanderhoop at Atria. About 20 people were in attendance. Buddy’s wife, Lisa, said it was great and that Buddy was “beaming from ear to ear.” There were toasts for his continued good health and lots of laughs. Both Buddy and Lisa wanted to send out a big thank you to Mimi. Last week I included a thank you to Angel Flights from Lisa; if you would like more information about Angel Flights or wish to make a donation you can go to their website at angelflightne.org.
John Wightman’s art show at the Chilmark Sovereign Bank is continuing through Valentine’s Day, and he will have some unique prints and jewelry for sale if you are looking for a Valentine’s Day gift. Lisa Vanderhoop will also be selling her Valentine’s Day cards and her Seadog calendars. And thank goodness Chilmark Chocolates reopens today at 11 am. See you there.
Today at the Aquinnah Library, Curious George will be stopping by at 3:30 during storytime. Kids and adults of all ages welcome. Come by for fun, stories, and maybe even some bananas!
The library is also hosting a Cinema Circus film festival on the following Thursdays: February 7, February 21, and March 7. Movies start at 5 pm. The films are the best that were shown at last summer’s Cinema Circus. This is a kids “pizza and a movie” event where there will be cheese pizza and veggies served, so you don’t have to worry about dinner for the kids afterwards. This event is being co-hosted by the Aquinnah Community Preservation Committee. There will be a film series for grown-ups as well in February and March, but the library hasn’t worked out the details yet.
On Saturday, February 9, kids of all ages can come in and make valentines for friends and family at the AQPL with Barbara.
On Tuesday, February 12, the library will host a FAFSA night from 5 to 7 pm, helping local residents with kids heading to college or with kids already in college to fill out their Federal Student Aid forms. Come in for help filling out the FAFSA, or just to ask questions. There will also be a list of local scholarship opportunities available for review at the library.
On Thursday, February 14, the library is having a low-key Valentine’s Day program for adults with or without sweeties of their own: a chocolate tasting! It will be from 4 to 5 pm, then from 5 to 7 there will be a romantic movie.
And lastly, the library just won a beautification award from the Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club in recognition of how nice the library’s outdoor environment looked over the past year. Congratulations!
Sassafras is hosting a class called “Wild Families” this Sunday from 1 to 3 pm. The theme will be Games and Fire. Saskia Vanderhoop, head of Sassafras along with her husband, David, says, “Fire has so much to offer in terms of learning and fun; gathering and selecting our wood, choosing a good site, safety, tending a good fire, and of course… roasting. So bring something to roast.” $25 for the whole family (grandparents included). To rsvp call 508-645-2008, and you can also check out their website at www.sassafrasmvy.org.
The next blood pressure clinic at the Aquinnah Town Hall will be on February 14, from 2 to 3 pm. Free and open to all residents of Aquinnah.
Happy Birthday to Ana Sargent who, although she is now on the West Coast, is a lady from Aquinnah — her birthday is Friday.
