Want a wonderful way to enjoy brunch this Sunday and learn more about food labeling? Slow Food Martha’s Vineyard offers food prepared by the Slow Food crew from 9 to 10 am at the Focus Center, 450 Lambert’s Cove Road, West Tisbury. A panel of local farmers will explain what food labels are saying. This is a zero waste event: bring your own setup. The cost is $12 for members and $15 for others. For tickets and for more, contact Slowfoodmarthasvineyard.org. The Focus Center is up the hill from Uncle Seth’s Pond on Lambert’s Cove Road; look for the number 450 on a big rock.

Did you enjoy the Super Bowl? That was one marvelous football game with some astonishing plays and exciting action. I wanted both teams to win: they were so good. And the quarterbacks were marvelous.

All kinds of excitement is occurring on our island this weekend. To start with, the Chinese New Year will be celebrated this Friday at Grace Church. You are invited to be part of the fun, complete with animated dragon and music. Also note that on Friday of the next week, following the Grace Church soup supper, Susan Klein will share Cozy Tales for a Winter’s Night at 7 pm. The suggested donation for that is $10.

Nora Nevin called to say that this Saturday the Tisbury Democratic Town Committee meets from 10 to noon at the Tisbury Senior Center to select delegates to the Party State Convention in July. All registered Democrats are welcome and eligible to run for delegate.

The Federated Church in Edgartown will offer free lasagna luncheons from 1 to 3 pm on Sundays, starting this week and running through March 24. Any and all are welcome! This will fill in the gap in the week when no free community meal is offered.

Here is another event you really should put on your calendar. A program on Understanding Lyme Disease will be offered in two parts at the Vineyard Haven Library. On this Tuesday the first session is a film called “Under Our Skin.” Then on the 19th, come to hear Dr. Lena Prisco and learn more about how to read your own lab results and what more you should know about Lyme Disease. Dr. Prisco is the director of the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital Lab and has extensive experience. She has made testing for Lyme Disease more available here. Both sessions will help you whether you have suffered from Lyme or not. The programs begin at 7 pm.

You can buy Valentine’s Day roses from the Tisbury School 7th-graders next week. They will be selling roses after school on Wednesday and Thursday from 2:30 to 4 pm in front of the school cafeteria. Red roses are $5 (a dozen for $50) or assorted are $4 ($40 a dozen). For more information, call Esther Teves, 508-696-6500.

My apologies. Last week I gave the Tisbury Senior Center a 693 number. I should know, and just so you know now: all town departments are 696 numbers. I am sorry for misleading you. And I can’t even blame the gremlins at the newspaper this time.

The Vineyard Montessori School offers summer camp called Camp Super Kid. You can sign your little one up now. Activities include movement and music, water play, cooking, field trips, and walks to the beach for youngsters up to seven years old. For more information, email director@vineyrdmontessory.com or call Debbie at 508-693-4090.

Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out today to Dan Harnen. On Saturday wish the best to Joan McDonough. Lots of candles on Sunday’s cakes for James O’Donnell and Jainaba Burton-Sundman. Judy Pachico parties on Monday. Happy birthday to Eli Thomas Hanschka, Nat Benjamin, and Abe Lincoln on Tuesday. Warmest wishes to my littlest granddaughter, Fiona Mayhew, who will be six years old next Wednesday.
