Vineyarders beat Norton in girls hoops
The Vineyard varsity girls basketball team improved to 14-4 with a scrappy 56-48 win Monday at Norton. The Vineyarders surged to a 20-8 lead but needed a big fourth quarter to get the job done.
M.V. helped its cause at the charity stripe by making 20 of 27 free throws. Maggie Riseborough made 5 of 6 from the line and led the Vineyard offense with 17 points. She also dominated the boards and grabbed 11 rebounds. Jenny Lindland scored 12. Katie Stewart and Kendall Robinson had nine each.
The Vineyarders close out the regular season at the Brad Sheridan Memorial Tournament in Marblehead, February 19-20.
Boys hoopsters drop two
The Vineyarders had a tough week, losing twice on the road. Tuesday afternoon in Abington, Brandon Cawley sank two free throws with eight seconds remaining to lift the Green Wave to a 56-54 win. The Abington star was unable to play in a 72-57 Vineyard win back on December 22 in Oak Bluffs.
The Vineyarders also lost in Dartmouth, 57-50, on February 7. The Purple put a damper on coach Mike Joyce’s birthday by coming out flat and committing 24 turnovers.
Izak Browne finished with 16 points. Jack Roberts and Deshawn James scored 11 each. Liam Weston had nine rebounds.
The Vineyarders (14-5) will try to right the ship against Tech Boston Academy on Sunday in Oak Bluffs on senior day, the final game of the regular season. Tip-off is at 4:30 pm.
