Lakers hold off Heat, face Suns in RCBL finals

A new champion will be crowned in the RCBL’s 25th season. The two-time defending champion Heat gave it their best shot but were finally extinguised in a 104-100 loss Monday night in Edgartown to the Lakers, who won the best-of-three semifinal series 2-1.

Six Lakers shot in double figures. Heath Estrella led the way with 21 points, followed by James Rolston (19), Caleb Nicholson (18), Jeff Labell (11), Damon Mello (10), and Lamar Moreis (10).

Adam Rebello had the hot hand for the Heat with 22 points, trailed by Jason Dyer (18), John Netto (14), Gary Gronken (14), and Lucas Brewer (11).

The second-seeded Lakers (9-6) advanced to the league finals to face the top-seeded Suns (13-1). The Lakers handed the Suns their only loss of the season, 92-89, on December 2, but lost 3 of 4 to the league leaders during the regular season.

Game one of the best-of-three finals tips off at 6:15 pm Monday night at the Martha’s Vineyard Boys and Girls Club in Edgartown. Game two is set for March 18 and game three, if necessary, will be March 25.
