IMP celebrates, you benefit

The IMPers are an official selection of the 2013 Chicago Improv Festival. This year marks the first IMP has been selected as an act in the biggest and most prestigious adult improv festival in the country. It is the only teen troupe to receive this honor.

To celebrate and help raise money for travel expenses, IMP offers a series of events this weekend geared toward different age groups. The fun starts at the Katharine Cornell on Saturday morning at 11 am with a story theater interactive performance, recommended for ages two and up. Kids watch the actors perform the “Three Little Pigs” and then get a chance to act out well-known fairy tales with the actors.

The fun continues through the evening on Saturday with programs for adults and teenagers, and on Sunday the fun moves to the YMCA’s Base in Alex’s Place. For more information go to IMP’s website, www.iMP4kids.com, or call 508-939-9368. Complete program listings appear in the Information Pages of The Times’ print edition and in the online calendar on mvtimes.com

Join a celebration of survival

More than 25 years ago, some Vineyard women began attending weekly meetings. They called themselves “Bosom Buddies” because each of them had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

In these meetings they found strong therapeutic support by sharing their experiences and their feelings with their peers. In time, others joined the group and, in 1986, the Martha’s Vineyard Cancer Support Group was formed. Eight years later the group was incorporated and they began accepting applications for financial assistance, funded by charitable donations.

Since then the M. V. Cancer Support Group, Inc. has given grants totaling more than $500,000, according to a press release. More than 500 individuals or Island families have been helped over the years.

Each year, usually in May, the group hosts a fundraiser which brings into their coffers the bulk of the money which will find its way back out in grants during the following year. The MVCSG has no administrative expenses; all money raised goes back into the community.

“A Celebration of Survival & Support” is planned for Sunday, March 10, beginning at 5 pm at the P-A Club in Oak Bluffs. There is no admission fee and no auction. “It’s a celebration, not a fundraiser, and everyone is welcome, ” said Jane Carroll, MVCSG president.

The MVCSG meets every Wednesday at noon in the library of the M.V. Hebrew Center in Vineyard Haven.
