Youth hockey
The Vineyard Peewees defeated Yarmouth-Dennis 5-1 at the Tony Kent Arena in South Dennis on Saturday in the first round of the playoffs.
Colby Zarba tallied twice for M.V. Hunter Ponte had a goal and two assists. Jack Murray and Ian Trance chalked up a goal and an assist apiece. Hailey Meader, David Krauthamer, Willson Slayton, Zachary Vukota and Cabot Thurber anchored the Vineyard defense. Joe Kershaw and Michael Metcalf combined for the win in goal. Layla Buckley, Meghan Sonia, and William Hermann had key puck interceptions.
With the win, the Vineyard advanced to the championships against Nantucket, with the date and time to be announced.
The Vineyard Squirts also topped Y-D at Tony Kent for a 2-1 playoff win. Aiden Marek was strong in net. Kenny Hatt, Lauren Boyd, Jackson Pachico, and Eli Gundersen played stellar defense. Playing on the front lines were Hunter Meader, Will Brugiere, Veronica Wendt, and the Araujos — Cam, Logan, and Aidan .
The Squirts will play Nantucket in the championship. The date and time are yet to be determined.
Little League registration and tryouts
Registration for all Martha’s Vineyard Little League divisions, from Tee-Ball through Babe Ruth, and Major League tryouts will be held March 16 from 10 am to 2 pm in the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School gym. Final registration and make-up tryouts will be March 23 from 1 to 4 pm, also at MVRHS. All players — including Babe Ruth and softball — over league age 10 (born between May 1, 2002 and April 30, 2003) must try out. Online registration at www.marthasvineyardlittleleague.org is highly recommended.
The fee for Tee-Ball and Farm League is $95. Minor and Major League is $120. The maximum fee per family is $250. Registration fees received after March 24 are subject to a $25 late fee.
