William O’Connell of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Oak Bluffs died on February 25. He was 81.

Bill was a sportscaster on Channels 5, 7, and 56 in Boston for nearly three decades. He was a radio host prior to and after his television career.

Bill’s extensive knowledge of and passion for music, especially jazz and the blues, was evident when listening to his radio broadcasts, or when visiting his family home. An avid photographer, lover of nature, and birds of all types, Bill could often be found walking on the trails and beaches of Martha’s Vineyard.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Carolyn (Herget) of Kingston; his son, Matthew O’Connell of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; his daughter, Deidre (O’Connell) Diodati of Naples, Fla., and Oak Bluffs; six grandchildren, Alec and Andrea O’Connell and Joseph, Nicholas, Lucas, and Lylah Diodati; and his devoted Bassett hound, Sadie.
