The crocuses are barely peaking through the soil in my yard, but they seem a bit reluctant to make a complete courageous appearance. With this off again, on again spring weather, who can blame them?

The IMPers, directed by Donna Swift, have been invited to perform in two shows in the Chicago Improv Festival on Saturday, April 6. They caught the attention of the executive director of the festival during their yearly performances in the teen festival. Since he called them “one of the best teen troupes in the country,” they decided to apply to the adult “big” festival and they were accepted. Oak Bluffs teens participating are Ashley Girard, Della Burke, Liam Waite, Eva Wilson, and Aaron Wilson. According to the festival they received a record number of 267 submissions and the IMPers were one of the 150 who received an invitation to perform. What a great honor.

Holy Week and Palm Sunday services and programs for First Baptist Church in Vineyard Haven are as follows: Sunday, March 24, 11 am Palm Sunday Worship Service; Thursday, March 28, 6 pm Maundy Thursday Dinner and Tenebrae Service, followed by a soup and bread meal and then a service of diminishing lights; Friday, March 29, 12 noon Good Friday service. The church is at the corner of William and Spring Streets in Vineyard Haven.

The last Lenten Fish Fry for the Good Shepherd Parish will be on Friday, March 29, from 5 to 7 pm, downstairs at St. Augustine’s in Vineyard Haven, followed by Stations of the Cross.

Good Shepherd Parish of M.V. Easter Triduum, schedule is Holy Thursday service on March 28 at 7 pm. Good Friday Service will be on March 29 at 3 pm. On Saturday, March 30,at 8 pm will be the Easter Vigil Service. All three services are at Our Lady Star of The Sea Church in Oak Bluffs.

Karen Achille, current president of the board of Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living, is inviting you to come to this winter’s 3rd Cultural Luncheon on March 23 at the Grill on Main in Edgartown. The program will feature Bonnie Stacy, chief curator of the Martha’s Vineyard Museum. Her power-point presentation will focus on the museum’s collections. A delicious lunch will follow. This nonprofit organization financially supports the Supportive Day Program for Alzheimer’s and Dementia clients and other seniors who would be at risk if left home alone during the day, the Off-Island Medical Taxi to Cape Cod doctor appointments, the publication of 55+ every month in the MV Times, and the distribution of food to income-qualifying seniors at the four island Councils on Aging.

The Martha’s Vineyard Women’s Network once again announces that one $2,500 grant will be awarded to a local small business person based on the Island who plans to improve, grow, or start a new business. The project or program should be consistent with MVWN’s mission to promote economic development on Martha’s Vineyard and all applications must be post marked by April 2, 2013.

A documentary on the controversial practice in America of raising the world’s most dangerous animals as common household pets, will be shown on Thursday, April 4,at 6 pm at the Oak Bluffs Public Library. The Thursday, April 25, movie night is an account of a family caught, with tens of thousands of strangers, in the mayhem of one of the worst natural catastrophes of our time. Ken Rusczyk has returned from over two weeks in sunny, hot Costa Rica. Most of his vacation was spent in Puerto Viejo, a funky rasta town eight miles from Panama on the Caribbean coast. His mornings favored long runs on a black sand volcanic beach, Playa Negra, then he would hit the hammock to read, watch overhead monkeys, and enjoy the local fruit. He returned in time not to miss Jim Pringle’s annual Saint Paddy’s party

The MV Dems are inviting all island Democrats to attend a Platform Hearing on Saturday March 23rd, and to present their recommendations for changes and/or additions to the State Democratic Platform. The meeting will be held at the Oak Bluffs Senior Center on Oak Bluffs Ave. from 9:30 am to 12 noon. Recommendations must be signed, in writing, and with your voting address.

Martha’s Vineyard Community Services is holding its bi-annual Electronics Disposal Day on Saturday, April 6, from 9 am to 2 pm on the campus of the MVCS on the Edgartown/Vineyard Haven Rd. (across from the high school). Bring your old computers, monitors, televisions, printers, notebooks, copiers, scanners, air conditioners, stereo equipment, dehumidifiers, cell phones, microwaves, fax machines, refrigerators, washers, dryers and ranges. Fees range between $1 and $30. No charge for mice and keyboards. Discounts for car loads. Disposal is off-Island in an environmentally friendly way. All proceeds will benefit MVCS. The Oak Bluffs School announces their pick-a-time port conference scheduling program that can be accessed through the school website. It will be open beginning March 25 to schedule parent teacher conferences. Conference dates and times are: Thursday, April 4, from 3 to 7 pm; Monday, April 8, from 1 to 5 pm; and Wednesday, April, 10 from 3 to 6 pm. Remember that these are noon dismissal days.

Oak Bluffs was well represented in the 2013 Southeastern Massachusetts District Junior Music Festival in Taunton last weekend in which advanced 7th, 8th, and 9th grade music students performed high-level repertoire under nationally known conductors. Oak Bluffs students selected to take part this year were Jesse Dawson, Kasey Stevenson, Tessa Whitaker, and Liam Weiland.

We send birthday smiles to Marcell Ben David and Gene DeFelice Sr. on the 23rd, Hunter Ponte on March 25th, followed by June Manning on the 26th, James Rebello and Hannah Gibb on March 27, and a special belated birthday smile to John “Goldie” Goldthwait who celebrated his 60th birthday on March 21.
