The Tri-County Saints of Mansfield and the Agawam Chiefs skated to victories last weekend at the Martha’s Vineyard Arena in the 23rd annual Red Kennedy mite hockey tournament. Tri-County took the B Division title with a 9-4 win over the Vineyard on Sunday morning in the championship game.
The Saints streaked to a 4-0 lead after the first period. The hosts held their own from there. Liam Marek tallied twice in the second stanza and completed the hat trick with a goal in the third. Jack Lionnette also scored in the third period as the Vineyard lit the lamp twice in 30 seconds. Lionnette, Dylan Biggs, and Caroline Kelleher earned assists on the day. Riley Sylvia was the busy netminder.
The Saints also topped the Islanders, 10-3, Saturday night in the final round robin game.
The Vineyard got off to an impressive start in the first two games by beating the Framingham Flyers, 7-1, on Friday night and doubling up the North Shore Icehawks, 8-4, on Saturday.
In the C Division, Agawam finished as the unbeaten winners by blanking the Minuteman Lady Flames (Marlboro), 3-0, in Sunday’s championship game. The Chiefs got all they could handle from the Flames in a 3-2 come-from-behind win the previous night. The champs dropped M.V. Purple 9-2 on Saturday morning and opened the tourney with a 6-0 win over M.V. White on Friday.
The two Vineyard teams played each other twice. Purple bested White 8-6 in an exciting consolation game played Sunday morning. The teams skated to a 2-2 tie on Saturday. Both Vineyard teams fell to the Flames in round robin play. The Purples lost 7-1 and the Whites 7-0.
