Priscilla May (West) Dickson, 89, of Vineyard Haven died on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. She was the wife of the late Arthur Byng Dickson.

Born in Oak Bluffs on November 7, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Robert Smith West and Alice Amanda Young. Priscilla was a homemaker who worked at Brickman’s. She was a graduate of the Tisbury School. One of her fondest memories was marching from the old school (now Center Street tennis courts) to the present Tisbury School where she also graduated High School.

Arthur and Priscilla were married 67 years ago in Manasquan, N.J. Soon after, Arthur left for the war overseas, and Priscilla moved to Wyandotte, Michigan, to be close to her husband’s family. She worked at Wyandotte Chemicals.

They returned to the Vineyard in 1947 with their infant daughter, Linda Jane Unczur. Priscilla was a devoted wife, mother, and friend. She loved her family and it was reflected in all she did for them. She was always available to her children, grandchildren, and her aging relatives.

In addition to her family, some of her joys were meeting every Wednesday with her girlfriends for coffee, which they did for over 30 years. She took pride in decorating the windows at the American Legion. She truly enjoyed supporting her husband Arthur in all of his volunteer activities. Her family has wonderful memories of beach picnics and cookouts. Knitting was a favorite pastime and the Red Stocking was a beneficiary of her hats and mittens.

Among her favorite memories of growing up in Vineyard Haven was sledding from her house on State Road (before there was traffic) right down to the waterfront and riding her Grandfather Luther’s horse, May, around the farm next door in Vineyard Haven.

Survivors include her sister, Nancy (West) Eddy, her daughter, Linda Jane Unczur, and her husband, Henry, her sons, Robert Roy Dickson and his wife, Annmarie, and Glenn Arthur Dickson and his companion, Patricia Rossi, all of Vineyard Haven. She also leaves 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to her caregiver and niece, Nancy Lee Brown, Elder Services, Lisa Schroeder, and her dearest and closest friend, Agnes Rice.

A graveside service was held on Monday, March 25, at Oak Grove Cemetery in Vineyard Haven. Memorial donations can be made in her memory to the American Legion Auxiliary Post 257.

Arrangements are under the care of Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home.
