On March 20, a group of Island selectmen helped Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver lunches as part of a “National March for Meals” campaign sponsored by the Meals on Wheels Association of America.

Selectmen volunteers included Warren Doty of Chilmark, Jeffrey “Skipper” Manter of West Tisbury, Michael Donaroma, Margaret Serpa, and Arthur Smadbeck of Edgartown, and Walter Vail of Oak Bluffs.

Volunteer drivers were George Gamble, Lorrie Pinckney, Stan Call, Ben Merrill, Bill Glazier, Peter Boak, R.J. Cage, Ellie Vanderhoop, Greg Marshall, and Mark Zeender.

Locally, Meals on Wheels is run by Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands. The program has grown by almost 30 percent this year, according to a press release from Heidi Dietterich, Nutrition Program Coordinator and Care Manager.

“With the help of 50 dedicated volunteers, our Island’s homebound seniors received 29,602 Meals on Wheels in Fiscal Year 2012,” Ms. Dietterich said. “This past year, Martha’s Vineyard’s program grew to the extent that we had to add yet another route, totaling eight routes that run each weekday, covering the Island from Aquinnah to Chappaquiddick.”

Volunteer drivers are needed Monday through Friday, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm and can pick whatever day fits their schedules. For more information, or to volunteer, call Ms. Dietterich at 508-693-4393, ext. 192.
