Islander named to US Sailing Team

West Tisbury resident Ryan Pesch has been named to the 2013 US Sailing Team Sperry Top-Sider, one of two 49er skippers on the 34-man roster.

Ryan grew up sailing and racing at Vineyard Haven Yacht Club and graduated from Boston University last May. The 49er is a double-handed boat that is considered the “men’s high-performance skiff” in the olympic classes. Ryan sails the 49er with another Boston University alum, 23-year-old Trevor Burd, from Marblehead. Their team is called PB Sailing and they maintain a website about their Olympic Campaign: www.pbsailing.org.

As a member of the US Sailing Team, Ryan will be training and competing around the world for the next three years in an effort to represent the U.S. in the 49er class at the summer 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Ryan recently left the Island for Europe to compete in the Princess Sofia Trophy in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, (March 30-April 6) and the Semaine Olympique Francaise in Heyers, France (April 20-27).

Later this summer Mr. Pesch will sail in Keil, Germany; Aarhus, Denmark; and Marseilles, France, as well as San Francisco, as part of the 2013 America’s Cup event.

Over the Hill Gang returns to the pitch

The Vineyard FC over 40s soccer team took on Chelse FC of Rhode Island on Sunday at Veterans Memorial Park in Vineyard Haven for a pre-season friendly soccer match. VFC defeated Chelse 5-3. Vineyard goals were scored by Rodolfo “Rudy” Fernandez, Daniel “Nacho” Vignolo, Damon “Crusher” Burke, Ricardo “Cafe” Andrade, and Skip Dostal.

The VFC will compete in the New England Over The Hill Soccer League Master’s Division 5 South this spring. The first league game is Sunday, April 7, in Boston vs. Albania United Veterans.

Kimberly Carlomagno honored at Haverford

MVRHS graduate Kimberly Carlomagno of West Tisbury was one of 15 Haverford College seniors honored on March 21 at the William W. Ambler Awards Banquet. The event honors the school’s top 15 scholar-athletes. The athletes selected are the seniors with the highest grade-point averages.

Ms. Carlomagno is a sprinter on the indoor and outdoor track teams and will graduate in May with a degree in biology.

Madison Hughes NEC rookie of the week

Madison Hughes, a 2012 MVRHS graduate and a freshman on the Central Connecticut State University women’s lacrosse team, was named as the Northeast Conference (NEC) rookie of the week for her performance in two Blue Devils victories last week.

Ms. Hughes combined for five goals, three ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers in two victories over St. Francis and Robert Morris to earn her first NEC weekly honor.

Against St. Francis, Hughes netted three goals, including the game-winner, and pocketed two ground balls. She then scored two more goals, recorded two draw controls, caused two turnovers, and nabbed a ground ball at Robert Morris. For the weekend, she averaged 2.5 goals per game. Madison has scored in three straight games for the Blue Devils.

Victoria victorious in the Ocean State

Victoria Scott won the girls 12 & under flight at the Riverside Rhode Island flight last weekend 6-3, 6-1, 6-0 to take home the championship. The win should place her close to the top 50 ranking in New England for her age group. Victoria trains at Vineyard Youth Tennis.

In other youth tennis action, Sean McAndrews defeated Jake Pertile in the Junior Tennis Exhibition at VYT last Saturday by a score of 7-5, 6-2. Both boys are looking for top spots on the high school team which started practice last week.

Michael Halisky open champ at Brown-Billone

Vineyard Youth Tennis head pro Michael Halisky won the Men’s Open division at the Brown-Billone Club in North Easton last weekend. Mr. Halisky has been ranked in the top 10 in the Men’s Open division and is trying to get into the top five this year.

Interscholastic volleyball

The West Tisbury Hawks are flying high at 5-0 after two more victories. Team Green swept the Tisbury Tigers on Tuesday, 25-5, 25-5, 25-9. On March 21, the Hawks won a tough battle of the birds over the visiting Edgartown Eagles, 25-9, 19-25, 25-10, 25-13.

A Skate Down Memory Lane with MVFSC

The Martha’s Vineyard Figure Skating Club (MVFSC) presents its 25th anniversary show A Skate Down Memory Lane, April 6 at 6 pm and April 7 at 1 pm at the Martha’s Vineyard Arena.

The show features performances by Snowplow Sam, Tots, Learn to Skate & Bridge Skaters, Freestyle Skaters and MVFSC Alumni. Returning guest skater Alex Aiken will also be performing.

Admission is $10 for adults, $5 Children/Seniors, and $25 Family Cap.
