Island Gymnastics hosts Sandcastle meet

Island Gymnastics Training School, on State Road in West Tisbury, will host the 20th annual Sandcastle meet on Sunday, April 7. Island team and pre-teams will compete against gymnasts from New England Sports Academy in Westboro, and In Flight Training School from Connecticut. The competition will begin at approximately 12:30.

VTC club championships under way

The Vineyard Tennis Center held the first tournament of its Club Championships last weekend. Mixed Doubles opened the series. Penny and Gavin Franklin won the title with a 4-6, 6-2, 7-4 win over Ken Armsted and Tammy King. Penny and Gavin reached the final by defeating last year’s champs, Skip Dostal and Cathy Lattanzi, in a tie-breaker 2-6, 6-4, 7-4.

Tjark Aldeborgh and Mary Breslauer opened the rounds with a solid win over Shawn Schofield and Susan Stevens 6-2, 7-5. Ken Armsted and Tammy King edged out Beth Sawyer and Todd Hollister in the quarterfinals. Tony Omer and Susie Safford defeated Steve Mussell and Paula Rego, 6-1, 6-3, before bowing to Tammy King and Ken Armsted 4-6, 7-5, 7-4.

The Club Championships continue with Women’s and Men’s Doubles on the weekend of April 27–28.

Interscholastic volleyball

The undefeated West Tisbury Hawks advanced to the junior high finals with a 25-9, 25-14, 25-16 sweep over Tisbury on Monday.

The Hawks will meet the Edgartown Eagles, who defeated Oak Bluffs 26-24, 25-9, 25-19 on Tuesday.

The final match is set for Friday at 3:30 at the Oak Bluffs School. The top-seeded Hawks were to have the home court advantage but had to switch venues due to the West Tisbury School gym being in use for play rehearsals.

Brian Walt wins MIT table tennis tourney

Brian Walt of West Tisbury took the first-place trophy in the MIT Spring 2013 Open table tennis tournament in Cambridge, March 30. He bested teammate Bob O’Rourke of Edgartown in the under 1100 division final match, 3-0. Both players are members of the Martha’s Vineyard Table Tennis Club.
