Martha’s Vineyard teams win five of six on busy Wednesday

Softball

Martha’s Vineyard 12, Bourne 8

The Vineyarders built a 10-2 lead in the first two innings and hung on for the opening-day win.

Every Vineyard player had a hit. Emily Turney and Emily Cimeno both went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Megan Buchanon was 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs, while Shelby Lavin was 2 for 3 with 1 RBI. Hailee McCarthy and Mariah Duarte also had two hits apiece.

Hailee McCarthy was the winning pitcher and finished with three K’s, one walk, and six earned runs in seven innings of work.

The Vineyarders host the Falmouth Clippers on Friday at 4 pm.

Baseball

Martha’s Vineyard 9, Bourne 7

The Vineyarders used a four-run sixth inning to beat the host Canalmen on opening day. Freshman Tim Roberts hit a two-run double and sophomore Jack Slayton had an RBI single to key the big inning. Jack Roberts finished with an RBI and two runs scored.

Tucker McNeely was the winning pitcher in his first varsity game. Jack Roberts earned the save.

Boys tennis

Martha’s Vineyard 4, Falmouth 1

The Division 3 Vineyarders (2-0) have started off the new season with back-to-back wins over Division 1 competition to extend their winning streak to 25 matches.

Kent Leonard lost the first set, 6-1, but rallied to beat Sean Dogas, 6-2, 6-2, at second singles. Justice Yennie downed Ted Price 6-1, 6-2 at third singles. Jackson McBride and Patrick McCarthy overpowered Connor Cobb and Troy Pettit 6-1, 6-1 at first doubles, while Justin Smith and Ryan Sawyer won 6-1, 6-1 over Graham Davis and Durham Ghelfi in second doubles. The only blemish on the Vineyard scoresheet was Natty Schneider’s 6-1, 6-0 loss to Spencer Pinkney in first singles.

Girls tennis

Martha’s Vineyard 3, Falmouth 2

The Vineyard girls rebounded from a tough 3-2 loss to nemesis Barnstable Tuesday with a win over the Clippers in the home opener.

Sam Potter rolled over Caroline Cobb in first singles, 6-2, 6-1. Annie Burton won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, over Sarah Monkiro at second singles. The Clippers got a point back with Katie O’ Sullivan’s 6-3, 6-4 win over Dylan Brockmeyer at third singles.

The Vineyarders earned a split in doubles. Julia Cooper and Annabelle Hackney won at first doubles, 6-3, 7-5, over Corinne McGillicuddy and Courcelle Stark, while Katherine Donegan and Diamond Araujo lost to Holly O’ Sullivan and Jessica Freedman, 6-3, 7-5, at second doubles.

Boys track and field

Martha’s Vineyard 78, Somerset Berkley 57

The host Vineyarders (2-0) won the Eastern Athletic Conference opener over the Raiders.

Galen Mayhew had a personal best win in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 18.6, and he also won the 400-meter hurdles by 2.5 seconds.

Mike Schroeder qualified for the state meet with a winning time of 4:48 in the one-mile race. Jeremy Alley-Tarter also qualified with a 2:06.8 first place finish in the 800 meters.

Girls track and field

Somerset Berkley 74, Martha’s Vineyard 53

The Vineyard girls were solid in the field events but mustered only 20 points in the running events.

Maggie Riseborough threw the shot 35 feet in her final attempt to pull out a victory and easily outdistanced the field in the discus. Shavanae Anderson won two events in her first varsity meet. She took the long jump with a leap of 15′ 3″, one inch away from qualifying for the state meet and finished first in the triple jump (30′ 10″).
