How is it only half way through April and I’m going full tilt and feel like it’s summer pace without the summer weather? That seems wrong, somehow. Why is it feast or famine around here? Anyone else feel this way?

At the Aquinnah library today there will be a kids’ movie and pizza night at 5 pm. On Saturday, there will be a drop-in crafts with an Earth Day theme starting at 10 am. Remember to stop by the library before planting your garden: they have many seeds that were donated by Heather Gardens.

Saturday is Earth Day and the Vineyard Conservation Society is hosting an all-Island beach cleanup. In Aquinnah you can meet up with other volunteers at Lobsterville, Philbin, or any of the Tribe beaches at 10 am. The cleanup will be until noon and then there is a pizza party (all the way down Island at the Harbor View Hotel from 12 noon until 2 pm.

This seems like a fun and whimsical event: today is National Poem in Your Pocket Day. If you would like to participate, put your favorite, or any poem in your pocket and read your poem anywhere, anytime on Martha’s Vineyard. Then from 6–11 pm at Pathways at the Chilmark Tavern there will be a party where people can read their poems and share their stories of where they read them. You are encouraged to film, either by still or video, and to share your video at the party (please get there by 5 pm if you have video to share). Light food and drink will be served, the party is free. For all the details, call William Waterway at 508-627-4929.

Calling all parents and kids of Aquinnah: the Community Preservation Committee is restarting plans to extend a road behind town hall to create some parking and to move (and add to) the playground. The CPC will be giving a presentation at the Town Meeting on May 14 at 7 pm, and there is $14,000 set aside to buy new equipment for the playground. Please come to the town meeting, which I know you were planning on coming to anyway, to support the proposal, then there will be a CPC meeting to discuss plans for the new playground (if it passes at the town meeting). I know that moving/changing things in this town is a big deal that lots of people have strong opinions about, but a revamped playground would be great. The one we have has always felt, to me, a little random with odd equipment.

Just a reminder that Sassafras is offering an early bird discount for people who sign up for any weeks in the July summer camp and give a deposit by May 1. You can call Saskia Vanderhoop at 508-645-2008 or go to
