Martha’s Vineyard Astros, Angels sweep Mashpee

The Martha’s Vineyard Astros and Angles of the Gateway Babe Ruth League rolled to wins over Mashpee Sunday at Vineyard Baseball Park.

The Astros met the Blue Falcons in Varsity Division play. In game one, the ‘Stros rallied from 4-2 down with five runs in the sixth inning. Nainoa Cooperrider threw two solid innings of middle relief to get the win, and Chris Mayhew got the save with two shutout innings. Mason Jeffers had six put-outs at third. Tristan Araujo and Jeffrey Cimeno each had two hits.

Pitchers Jacob Cardoza and James Sashin kept Mashpee’s bats quiet in game two. Aksel Cooperrider had three hits, including a two-run double. Jonas Lukowitz added two hits and an RBI.

Following the Astros sweep, the M.V. Angels of the Gateway Babe Ruth division took the field and downed the Blue Falcons 21-7.

Elijah Wade hit a grand slam and a double for the Halos. Nick Fiore was 3 for 3 with three runs scored, 2 RBIs, and 2 stolen bases; Theo Gallagher had three hits and three runs scored; Curtis Fournier tripled and singled twice; and Wilson Redfield tripled. Aidan Aliberti earned his second win, striking out five. He also helped his cause at the plate with a single and two RBIs.
