The Seastreak, the fast passenger ferry that operates daily seasonal ferry service between Martha’s Vineyard and New Bedford, has partnered with Tremblay’s Bus and Motor Coach Company to provide daily bus service between Boston and its New Bedford State Pier terminal beginning Memorial Day weekend.

The bus will make two round-trips Saturday through Thursday, and three trips on Friday between South Station and the New Bedford terminal. The schedule calls for a two and a half hour trip from Boston to the Vineyard.

Seastreak operations manager John Silvia said the company often receives calls from people who arrive in Boston and want to know how to reach New Bedford to travel to the Vineyard. He said the company decided to tap that market. “We thought this would be enticing for people who don’t want to sit in Cape traffic,” Mr. Silvia said. He expects direct bus service will also benefit Vineyarders who want to travel to Boston for medical appointments or shopping.

One advantage, Mr. Silvia said, is that because the bus is chartered by Seastreak there is never a risk of the boat leaving if the bus arrives late due to traffic.

A round-trip ticket from Boston to the Vineyard, including bus service to and from Boston, costs $68 for adults and $40 for children 2-12. The one way fare is $38 for adults and $20 for children.

The bus has a capacity of 44 passengers, and reservations are recommended. A daily and weekend schedule offers a choice of convenient departure times and runs from May 24-October 14, according to a press release.

“We view this as one more convenient option that Seastreak can offer to Martha’s Vineyard residents and visitors alike,” said Seastreak President James Barker. “This inaugural Boston motor coach service gives our friends on the Vineyard a hassle-free alternative at a very reasonable cost, whether they’re going to Boston for vacation or medical purposes. It’s the Seastreak way of saying that our relationship with the Island is very important to us.”

Seastreak will also offer scheduled fast ferry round-trip weekend summer service between New York City and Martha’s Vineyard this summer.

The fast passenger ferry company provides year-round high-speed catamaran service to points in Manhattan from Highlands, N.J., with a fleet of four vessels.

  1. The Boston bus connection would be great, but none of the Seastreak agents can tell you how to find the bus at South Station. If you use the South Station connection, make sure that you have a telephone number to call if you have trouble finding the bus.
