Antone H. Rezendes Sr., a longtime resident of West Tisbury, died on April 18, 2013 at the age of 94.

He was born April 12, 1919 in Fall River, the son of the late Antonio and Elizabeth Rezendes.

It was in the late 1920s that he came to the Vineyard to live with his grandfather. During this time he had many jobs. He was the pin setter at the old Oak Bluffs bowling alley. His favorite job was at the Flying Horses where he met his future wife. He would drop the rings for everyone to catch and somehow he always managed to make sure his future wife had gotten the golden ring. He was married in 1942.

He was a corporal in the United States Army Air Corps in WWII. He was a painter, a plumber, and a custodian at the West Tisbury School. He loved to paint pictures and play pool at the P-A Club with his friend Ken Ralston. He loved to go bowling at the former Spinnaker Lanes alley. He loved to dance and it was always the highlight at events or parties. Both Tony and his wife were known as the Vineyard’s own Fred and Ginger.

He loved the Red Sox, the Patriots, the Celtics and the Bruins — a true New England fan all the way. He was a member of the American Legion Post #257 and the Holy Ghost Association.

He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Gertrude V. (Amaral) Rezendes, a brother, Joseph Rezendes, and a sister, Catherine Ferreira. He was survived by a son, Antone H. Rezendes Jr. and his wife, Doreen, a daughter, Cheryl A. Metell and her husband, Daniel, a daughter, Victoria Thurber and her husband, Scott all of West Tisbury. He was survived by his grandchildren, Beth Kaeka and her husband, Dwight, Amy Del Torto, Dana Rezendes and his wife, Lori, Jenny Dowd and her husband, Mike, Lisa Trenoweth and her husband, Travis Thurber and his wife, Heather, and Ian Thurber. He was survived by his great-grandchildren, Marissa Kaeka Lopenzo and her husband, Nicholas, Dwight Kaeka Jr (DJ), Devin Del Torto, Kendra Del Torto, Lorinda Martin, Daniel Martin, Emily Mae Trenoweth, Cabot Thurber, Brahmin Thurber and Nathan Rezendes. Also many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

A special thank you to his doctors and nurses at Mass General Hospital, Dr. Peter Laursen and Dr. Michael Jacobs for saving him 16 years ago.
