To the Editor:

Thank you to everyone who participated and supported for the 2013 Bike MS: Ride the Vineyard on Saturday, May 4. It was a great day for the ride and a great day for the cause. Funds raised through this pledge ride benefit the search for a cure for multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system. Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from one person to another. Thanks to the success of events like the Ride the Vineyard, new treatments and advances in research are giving new hope to people affected by the disease.

The Martha’s Vineyard Boys & Girls Club is proud to partner with the National MS Society, www.nationalmssociety.org, to put on this great event, which in addition to funding MS research and awareness, also raises money to support our local youth.

More than 500 riders participated in the event, supported by more than 150 volunteers. We truly appreciate the patience and caution displayed by all the vehicle drivers who encountered our riders out on the road, and we apologize for any delays. Thank you to the Oak Bluffs, Tisbury, Edgartown, Chilmark and Massachusetts State police for their help in managing traffic crossings and the safe travels of the riders.

We also recognize our local business sponsors for their continued support of the Ride the Vineyard: ABC Disposal, Araujo Brothers, Clarion of Martha’s Vineyard, the Chilmark Store, Cronig’s Market, Dippin’ Donuts, Edgartown Bicycles, Hostelling International-MV, the Island Inn, Little Rock Farms, Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, Sharky’s Cantina, and Vineyard Cash & Carry.
