Massachusetts Secretary of Education Matthew H. Malone will visit Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School and West Tisbury School today.

“We are pleased that Secretary Malone has decided to make one of his first school district visits on the Cape and Islands to the Martha’s Vineyard Public Schools,” superintendent of schools James Weiss said in an email to The Times, in response a request for comment. “He will have an opportunity to share his vision with our administrators at a cabinet meeting and view the good work of our students as well.”

There is no formal program planned at either school. Instead, Secretary Malone plans to tour the two schools to see teaching and learning in action, according to director of communications Matthew Wilder.

“The Secretary is visiting schools across the Commonwealth to see innovative teaching practices, and he wanted to visit Martha’s Vineyard to see that for himself,” Mr. Wilder said in an email in response to questions emailed from The Times. “He also wants to hear from school leaders and teachers about what the governor’s administration can be doing to better support them.”

Prior to his appointment as Secretary of Education, Mr. Malone served as superintendent of the Brockton Public Schools and Swampscott Public Schools.

“I know Matt as a school superintendent who started his career when I arrived in the Commonwealth and am sure he will bring energy and a proven understanding of public schools to the position,” Mr. Weiss said.
