A new favorite – Remembrance Day

To the Editor:

I’ve added a new event to my list of Vineyard favorites. Hospice hosted a Remembrance Day at the Harbor View Hotel Sunday and it was wonderful. Guests displayed photos (and asparagus) of those beloved family and friends who have passed on and told funny and poignant stories about them. We bonded over clam chowder, sandwiches, and tears. Terre Young quoted from Ira Byock’s book about the four things you should say to your loved ones, living or deceased – Please forgive me, I forgive you, thank you, and I love you.”

Gus Ben David brought doves (pigeons) to symbolically carry our messages to our departed loved ones. The doves circled around in front of the Edgartown Lighthouse under a beautiful double rainbow before heading back to their home in Oak Bluffs. I had a chance to visit with some old friends and meet some new ones. We left with our hearts a little lighter, clutching our sprig of rosemary for remembrance. I plan to look for it next spring and hope you will too.
