Many Memorial Day services were held throughout the Island, and the Oak Bluffs School celebrated Memorial Day with the help of their local hero veterans — Commander Buddy Oliver, American Legion, Sergeant JoAnn Murphy, U.S. Army, Master Sergeant David Kann Jr., U.S. Air Force, Captain Gene Defelice, U.S. Marine Corps, Lt. Colonel David Berube, Chaplain, U.S. Air Force, and Lt. Colonel Bill Carroll, U.S. Air Force. Special readings were given by the students to recognize our veterans.

Caitlyn Clark of Oak Bluffs, the daughter of Carol Christopher Clark and granddaughterof Evelyn Christopher, has made the Dean’s List at Flagler college in St. Augustine, Florida, with straight As for the 5th consecutive semester since being enrolled at this college for the past 2 ½; years. Cait did Practicum at Nease High School as Assistant teacher for the English Dept., teaching three 12th-grade classes. Cait met the English teacher of Nease H.S. on the shuttle to the airport and aggressively pursued him for her position as student teacher for her practicum in the same manner she used in her junior year at MVRHS when she pursued her career with the M.V. Times. Cait is back for the summer, working hard to earn tuition for fall.

Martha’s Vineyard residents will have the opportunity to enjoy a beloved children’s fantasy when the Martha’s Vineyard School of Ballet presents the Ballet of Alice In Wonderland at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School Performing Arts Center on Sunday, June 2, at 2 pm. Tickets may be purchased at the door for $10. Any Oak Bluffs children performing in Alice In Wonderland include Ava McGee as the Cheshire Cat, Delilah Butler, Angelina Campbell, Nicole Haley, Kaitlin Kingsley, Madison Pitman, and Narla Pitman.

The Recreation Dept. at Windemere is holding the Windemere Residents Annual Auction on May 31 at the Ag Hall from 6 to 8 pm. The auction raises funds to allow the residents out into the community for concerts and plays, baseball games, to hear speakers and listen to choirs. It also makes it possible to have people come in to Windemere and do programs for the residents such as yoga and exercise instructors, musical and animal programs. Flowers are provided for everyone’s birthdays as well as a special birthday meal of their choosing. There are weekly trips for ice cream, a happy hour and teas and socials with classically trained musicians. The auction makes it possible to provide all of these things. The auction has so many wonderful items this year, like a weekend in Chappy, sailboat cruises, handmade furniture,lamps, shawls, table runners, jewelry, garden items, paintings by Ray Ellis, and photographs by Alison Shaw. There will be a live and silent auction as well as a raffle.

Celebrate the Summer Solstice with Spindrift Marionettes and the African Artists Community Develop Project on Saturday, June 15. The celebration will take place from noon until 3 pm at the Tisbury Waterworks.Birthday smiles to Charlene Barbosa and Vicki Simione on the 31st, Jaime Reilly and Erika Cournoyer on June 1, Mia Rebello on the 2nd, Bert Combra on June 4, my sister Ann Hearn on the 5th, followed by Hilda Mitchel and Jennifer Robinson on the 6th.
