Heavy rain forced the Tisbury School to change its annual “March to the Sea” to a march around the gymnasium last Friday. But the change in venue did not dampen the respectful spirit of the annual Memorial Day tribute by students and staff to those who have died in their nation’s service.

The program included rousing patriotic tunes by the school band. Seventh-grader Emily Hewson sang the National Anthem. Guest veterans included Dukes County Director of Veterans Services Jo Ann Murphy, Lt. Col. Bill Carroll, USAF (Retd.), Senior Staff Sergeant David Kann, USAF (Retd.), and Sergeant Julius Middleton, an Army National Guard member.

In keeping with their usual tradition, students brought flowers with them, which are usually tossed into the water at the town pier in Owen Park in memory of those who died in war. The flowers were placed in baskets instead, and taken to the harbor later.
