The summer season has started and it’s supposed to be busy from here on out. But, oddly, there is really nothing to report this week. It looks like we have a little lull between the race to get ready by Memorial Day weekend and the later part of June when things really pick up.
Everything is open. I have seen kids swimming in the water at Red Sand Beach. I have gotten ice cream at the Galley and the boys in my house have been up to the Cliffs for sunset. I got out my summer clothes and now I am just waiting for the onslaught, but I also enjoy the lull and taking the opportunity to see friends that I know I won’t see again until September.
Tomorrow night is the Chilmark School PTO Family Potluck Dance Party from 6:30 to 8 pm at the Chilmark Community Center. On Saturday, June 8, the PTO Family Yard Sale is from 9 am to 2 pm.
The Aquinnah Library will host another talk on green living this Tuesday at 5 pm at the Old Town Hall. Larry Schubert and Gary Harcourt will speak about wind energy and building wind turbines. Refreshments will be served. The summer reading program will start at the end of June with a kickoff at the Ag Hall. Details to come.
If you want to get more politically involved, here’s a great opportunity: M.V. Democrats will meet on Saturday, June 8, at the Howes House in West Tisbury, from 9 to 10:30 am to kick off Island participation in the Ed Markey campaign for the June 25 election for the U.S. Senate. You can pick up campaign literature, get absentee ballot information, volunteer for Phone Banks and Canvassing. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
Jim and Kathy Newman recently returned from a two and a half week trip to Paris, St. Petersburg, and Berlin. While in Berlin they had dinner with Elaine Vanderhoop and her sister. Elaine gave Jim and Kathy a tour of Berlin and everyone had a lovely time. Is that what you have to do to have dinner with your neighbors on this Island: go to a foreign country?
Congratulations to our library director, Lisa Sherman, who had an eight-pound, nine-ounce baby boy named Scout Jeffrey Sherman last Wednesday, May 29. Happy Birthday to Sarah Saltonstall who celebrates on Saturday. And best wishes for quick healing to Waylon Sauer who broke his arm last week on the playground. Those wishes are actually for his parents who now have a physically impaired six-year-old on their hands at the start of the busiest time of year. Hope that cast comes off soon!
