Golf tourneys score an eagle for Island charities

The Vineyard played host to a pair of benefit golf tournaments over the weekend, and more than $50,000 was raised for Island charities.

The 25th annual Martha’s Vineyard Youth Hockey Golf Tournament was held Saturday at the Edgartown Golf Club. Ninety-six golfers played in the event, which raised $17,000.

The foursome of Ken Sylvia, Mike Sylvia, Mike Peters, and Brian Lane were the tournament champions. Peter Jeffers, T.R. Fullin, Joe Fontaine, and Kris Lukowitz were the runners-up, followed by Ken Magnuson, Tim Bettencourt, Mike Shannessy, and Tony Inamorati in third place and Peter Gillis, Gary BenDavid, Andy Marek, and Erik Bruguiere in fourth.

Sunday at Farm Neck Golf Club in Oak Bluffs, the 19th annual Children’s Benefit Golf Tournament raised more than $35,000 to support the programs and services of the Martha’s Vineyard Boys and Girls Club and Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Martha’s Vineyard.

Finishing in first place with a score of 60 (handicapped adjusted score of 57.6) were Rich Yuen, Sean Thornberry, Lee Guittar, Al Eville, and Mike Holenko. The quintet of Richard Barbini, Jane Barbini, Steve Mussell, Joyce Schiff, and Andrew Schiff were the tourney runners-up with a score of 62 (adjusted 57.6). Sally Rorer, Ted Rorer, Tia Bullard, Peter Bullard, and Sandy Bradbury were third with 62 (adjusted 57.8).
