Gleaning good stuff

To the Editor:

The mission of Island Grown Gleaning is to harvest food that farmers can’t and donate it to low-income families, senior citizens, school cafeterias, and programs providing meals and groceries to those in need. Most of the produce that we rescue goes to folks who have limited access to fresh local produce. During summer and fall months, school cafeteria staff preserve and freeze the Island’s gleaned bounty for use in winter meals.

We were so happy to work with the following farms in 2012: Morning Glory, Whippoorwill, Martha’s Vineyard Organics, North Tabor, Bayes-Norton, and Slip Away. Together, they donated a combined total of 23,350 pounds of delicious, nutritious produce.

If you can volunteer for a few hours of harvesting, delivering, or preservation work, or if you would like information about donating your farm or garden surplus, please contact Jamie@IslandGrown.org or 508- 687-9603.
