Martha’s Vineyard boys tennis team on to state finals Monday

The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boys tennis team beat Northern Mass. champion Weston 4-1 in the best of five state semifinal match, clinching a second consecutive appearance in the MIAA Division 3 state final.

Justice Yennie won 6-2, 6-4 at third singles; Jackson McBride and Patrick McCarthy prevailed 6-3, 6-1 at first doubles; and Ryan Sawyer and Justin Smith were 6-3, 6-0 winners at second doubles; giving the Vineyarders an insurmountable lead in the state semifinal. Second singles player Kent Leonard won 6-3, 6-3. Weston scored its point with a 6-1, 6-2 win at first singles over the Vineyard’s Natty Schneider.

The Vineyarders were scheduled to defend their state championship Thursday at St. John’s High in Shrewsbury against Central Mass. champion Bromfield. The match has been moved to 3:30 pm, Monday due to the threat of rain.
