Richard Gross wins Tony Award

Richard Gross of Philadelphia and Aquinnah recently won a Tony Award as one of the producers of the Broadway revival of Edward Albee’s play, “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” The production won in the category of “Best Revival of a Play.”

Mr. Gross, an attorney, works as a real estate financier. For 19 years he also has partnered in producing Broadway plays with Jeffrey Richards, a friend he made as a student at Wesleyan University. Mr. Richards, who started his career on Broadway in public relations, is now a seven-time Tony Award-winning producer. “The awards ceremony was very exciting,” Mr. Gross said.

The 67th Annual Tony Awards, a joint venture of the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, were presented June 9 at New York’s Radio City Music Hall. “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” also won two other Tony Awards, one for Tony Letts for best leading actor in a play and another for Pam MacKinnon for best director of a play.

In celebration of the play’s 50th anniversary, the Steppenwolf Theatre Company production opened on Broadway on October 13, 2012, exactly 50 years to the day after the play’s original Broadway opening in 1962.

“It was a wonderful revival,” Mr. Gross said of the play in a phone conversation Tuesday with The Times. “Edward Albee was at the opening, and said it was the best production of the play he had ever seen.”

“Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” also won the 1963 Tony Award for Best Play.
