Youth soccer

The South Coast Soccer League regular season came to a close with four MV United teams qualifying for postseason play.

The MV United Under-15 girls clinched a playoff berth following a 1-1 draw with first place Dighton-Rehoboth Sunday at Veterans Park. Under coach Rocco Bellebuono, United (4-2-2) finished in fourth place and will play at D-R this weekend in the SCSL semifinals. The Vineyard, anchored by defenders Kaela Vecchia Zeitz and Casey McAndrews, along with keeper Cana Courtney, held off a barrage of D-R shots to keep the league leaders at bay.

The U-18 men took to the Veterans Park pitch at 7:30 am Sunday morning and handed Oceana of North Eastham a 9-0 pasting. MV United finished top of the table with seven wins and a draw and will host fourth-place Mashpee this Sunday. The Blue Falcons were the lone team to beat coach Esteban Aranzabe’s side this season.

Both Vineyard U-11 boys teams reached the postseason.

Ben Taylor scored a last-minute goal from Morgan Estrella to lift the the Division 1 Purple team to a 2-1 win at second place Sandwich. Taylor set up Josh Dix for the first goal. M.V. finished in third place with a 5-2-1 (wins, draws, losses) record. The teams will meet again on June 22 at Fairhaven in the league semifinals.

The Division 2 U-11 Black team claimed third place with a 7-0-1 record, following a 2-1 win at Norton. Josh Sampaio notched the match-winner. Nick DePaula converted a penalty kick in the first half. The Vineyard will host sixth-place Westport in the semifinals on Sunday.

In other SCSL matches, the MV United U-13 girls blanked visiting Mariner, 4-0; the U-13 boys drew, 1-1, with host Swansea; and the U-12 boys lost to Swansea in an 11-7 goalfest at Veterans Park.

Youth lacrosse

The Vineyard Girls Youth Lacrosse League had their final home games of the season Sunday with mixed results. The U-15s took on a talented Dartmouth team and lost, 9-5. Lacey Dinning, Julia Regan, Lily Pigott, Audrey McCarron, and Rose Capobianco scored the Vineyard goals. Goalies Kylie Hatt and Hailey Meader stopped 11 and 10 shots repectively.

The U-13s were out-sized by Lakeville but prevailed in a 9-8 nailbiter to stay unbeaten. Addy Hayman scored three goals, while Meghan Sonia and Alexis Condon tallied twice. Sally Caron and Suzanne More-Stratton had a goal apiece. Hailey Meader was stellar tending the twine. The girls wrap up their season on Saturday at the annual Jamboree in Northborough.

Little League

The Red Sox and Tigers are tied for first place at 13-2, seven games ahead of the pack as the regular season winds down.

Tuesday’s result:

Tigers 14, A’s 10

Matt Morris and Hunter Cleary each drove in a pair of runs on three hits as the Tigers broke open a close game with a nine-run fifth. The A’s fought back with six runs of their own in the sixth, led by Owen Porterfield and Hoffie Hearn. Tiger Miles Sidoti struck out three to earn his third save.

Monday’s result:

Pirates 2, Cubs 1

Harold Lawry lined a shot to third, scoring Riley Amaral in the sixth as the Bucs edged the Cubbies under the lights Monday at Veira Park. In a game dominated by stellar pitching and defense, Pirate Jack Sierputoski and the Cubs’ Bryce Nigthlinger both pitched five strong innings and were relieved by Owen Bresnick and Keaton Aliberti respectively. Harold Lawry also had a double on the night, while Aliberti had two singles.

Sunday’s result:

Cubs 11, A’s 10

Cubs’ slugger Scotty Lively led the way with a home run, a pair of doubles and five RBIs, while rookie Keaton Aliberti smacked a pair of doubles. Rookie pitcher Andrew Marchand earned his first victory of the year with four solid innings of work.

Down 8-2, in the bottom of the fourth, the A’s staged a spirited comeback but fell just short. Ben Peters and Avery Villegas each had two hits and Mikey Cosgrave reached base in three at bats. A’s starter Colby Balboni kept his team in the game with 5-plus solid innings.

Saturday’s results:

Red Sox 12, Cubs 6

Rookie Finn Lewis reached base four times, had two RBIs and scored a pair of runs as the Red Sox doubled up the Cubs. Sam Cranston threw a complete game to earn the win. Bryce Nightlinger paced the Cubbies with two hits and two runs scored.

Pirates 12, A’s 2

The A’s jumped on top with two runs in the first but Bucs’ starter Harold Lawry recovered to close the door, throwing a two-hitter. Jack Sierputoski keyed the Pirates offense with a home run and three more hits. Owen Bresnick, Aiden Marek, and Riley Amaral added two hits apiece for the victors.

Tigers beat Cards 11-8, 11-3

The Tigers kept pace with the first place Red Sox by sweeping a doubleheader from the Redbirds.

Babe Ruth baseball

The Vineyard Angles swept a doubleheader Sunday at Vineyard Baseball Park, improving to 13-1 to clinch the top seed in the playoffs.

The Halos opened up with a mercy-shortened 18-5 win over the Gateway Indians from Wareham. Curtis Fournier threw a complete game, scattering five hits and walking none over four innings. Fournier also added two hits, two RBIs, and scored three runs. Elijah LaRue, Nick Fiore, Aidan Aliberti, Mercer Kelly, and Graham Lewis each drove in two runs.

In game two, Theo Gallagher hit a walk-off single in the seventh to lift the Angels past fellow Islanders, the Brewers, 7-6, at Vineyard Baseball Park. Aidan Aliberti had a triple and Elijah LaRue stole four bases for the Halos.

Also on Sunday, the second-place Brewers defeated the visiting Gateway Indians 13-11. Jack Sayre went 3 for 4 with two triples and five RBIs. Zack Moreis reached base in all four at bats, scoring three runs.
