To the Editor:
Every year I am so grateful to award a memorial scholarship to a deserving high school graduate who plans to pursue a degree in the field of science. This scholarship is to honor my late husband, David Brand, who taught at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School as an earth science teacher in 2007-2008.
Principal Stephen Nixon, usually accompanied by drama teacher Kate Murray, performed by singing and playing guitar, filling the Katharine Cornell Memorial Theatre with faculty, students, and community. All profits from the concert are dedicated to the noble cause of helping a student further his or her education in a field that was so important to David.
There is nothing we can do to bring back our loved ones, but one way to show how much they are missed is to honor them with a relevant scholarship given to someone who shares the same goals of helping our earth. This heartfelt gesture is such a wonderful example of how special this Island is. I feel very lucky be a part of this caring and conscientious community.
