Jane C. Santos of New York and Edgartown died peacefully on April 22, 2013, at Maine General Medical Center with her sister Ruthann Keating and nephew Jeffrey Keating at her bedside.
Born on September 11, 1933 to Ernest J. Santos and Adeline BenDavid Santos at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital in Oak Bluffs, Jane attended the Edgartown School and graduated with the Class of 1951. Upon graduation she went to work for the Cape & Vineyard Electric Company for four years before heading to New York City with her lifelong friend and classmate, Dorothy Gaspar Esposito. They were soon joined by another Vineyard friend, Dona Duarte O’Leary, and two years later Jane’s sister, Ruthann.
Jane enjoyed a long and successful career at Time, Inc., which later became Time-Warner. She retired after 35 years of service, continuing to live in New York and spending her summers and the holidays on the Vineyard.
Jane loved to travel, but her heart was always with the Vineyard. Jane spent the last five months living at Granite Hills Estates in Hallowell, Maine, enjoying the many activities and social life provided there. She especially enjoyed having all her family visiting with her in Maine.
Jane dearly loved and will be sadly missed by her two sisters, Ruthann Keating of Freedom, Maine, and Helen Gibson and her husband, Dennis, of Edgartown, and her brother, William Santos, and his wife, Mary-Alice, of Westfield. She is also survived by her nieces Pamela Stendardi and her husband, Raymond Stendardi, Kimberly Gibson Kane, Stacen Keating LaPoint and her husband, Michael LaPoint, Kara Santos Gentle and her husband Stephen Gentle; Shawn Keating and his wife. Rosemarie, Jeffrey Keating and his wife, Stacey, Thomas Keating and his wife, Christina, Eric Gibson and his wife, Kathleen, as well as 14 great nieces and nephews. Also, three very dear friends, Dorothy Esposito, Dona O’Leary, and Doris Termini.
Jane was predeceased by her parents and two brothers, Ernest J. Santos, Jr. and Robert Santos.
Anyone wishing to make a donation in her memory may do so to any of the organizations or charities associated with the Vineyard or to The American Heart Association.
Following her wishes, a graveside service attended by friends and relatives was held on April 27, 2013 followed by a celebration of her life at a luncheon at Farm Neck, a restaurant she loved to frequent every time she visited the Vineyard.
