Aquinnah

I have a massive case of summer vacation envy. I want to be on vacation and enjoy all the Island has to offer. I want lazy days at the beach, cookouts, dinner parties, and to see all the fabulous dances at the Yard, all the exhibits up around the Island and hear all the concerts, but I can’t because I live here and am working five nights a week for the next ten weeks plus some day time work here and there. It’s so not fair. I know I’m in good company, but I just had to mention it.

The Aquinnah Cultural Center is now open. Their exhibit and demonstration schedule is not yet posted, but you can always come by during their hours of operations for a house tour. They are open Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm. Their phone number is 508-645-7900.

Can someone tell me that yes, indeed, we are meeting on Old South Rd. on July 4th at 11 am for the Annual Fourth of July Parade and treasure hunt? Yes? Great! I’ll see you there.

Yesterday was the first of the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival’s Cinema Circus and Summer Film Series at the Chilmark Community Center. Next week’s film is: “Dirty Wars” at 8 pm, but get there early for dinner. You can always buy tickets online at ticketsmv.com. Cinema Circus starts at 5 pm with lots of fun activities for the kids and lots of parents in need of talking with other adults after a long day of being with their kids. I guarantee you will have a good time. Go to tmvff.org for all the information.

Here is Nicole Corbo’s Stand-up Paddle-boarding schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday at 7 am, paddle Fit Class in Aquinnah. Location changes due to weather conditions, Nicole will email everyone the night before with the exact location. Tuesday, Sunset Paddle Fit class at 6:30 pm, Wednesday Sunset SUP Yoga on Quitsa Pond and Friday, SUP Yoga in Edgartown 10am. Nicole also teaches private lessons, and before you take one of her group classes you must take a private to learn the ins and outs of paddle boarding. This can be a group situation as well if you have a friend that would like to learn with you. She can take up to six people at a time. Contact Nicole at 808-640-6935.

The Martha’s Vineyard Magazine’s “Best of the Vineyard” issue is out and while I have some issues with a couple of the winners (for instance: How could Philbin not win best beach?), I would like to congratulate some of our up-Island winners. Buddy Vanderhoop’s Tomahawk Charters was runner-up in the Best Fishing Charter Boat category. The Bite was runner-up for best fried clams and of course Chilmark Chocolates won for Best Island Made Candy. Congratulations to all the winners and to all the businesses in Aquinnah that did not get voted number one: we know that you’re the best.

In the same issue of MVM is a wonderful article by our own Richard Skidmore about the businesses at the Cliffs. I always think that I know all of Richard’s talents and then a new one appears.

Congratulations to Cora and Peter Weiss who celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary last Friday.
