African arts & goods for sale, plus puppets

The African Artists Community Development Project (AACDP) is holding three craft sales this summer at the Grange Hall in West Tisbury. Find wood carvings from Zambia, Tuareg silver jewelry from Niger, Kuba cloth from the Republic of Congo, baskets from Zimbabwe, and textiles from Ghana and Tanzania on July 2 (12 noon–6 pm), July 23 (10 am–4 pm), and August 6 (10 am–4 pm). All proceeds benefit the Mama Bakhita Home for Disabled Children in Livingstone, Zambia, and the AACDP’s Education and Income Generational Projects in Zambia.

Also on Tuesday, July 2, Spindrift Marionettes will perform a puppet show, “Cupid and Psyche,” to benefit the Mama Bakhita Center. An exotic blend of shadow, human-sized, and god-sized puppets, the show is centered around love and redemption. For children ages seven and older, and adults. The event starts at 7 pm at the Grange Hall, and costs $10; $25 for families.

Open Stage at Y

Each Friday night this summer, Alex’s Place at the YMCA of M.V. opens its doors for performers of all ages and types to showcase their talent before an audience at Open Stage. From musical performances, clean comedy, dance, spoken word, and poetry to short plays and more, everyone is welcomed.

Open Stage offers unique family-friendly nighttime entertainment set in a cool candle-lit lounge complete with a raised stage, drum kit, microphones and sound equipment. Freshly baked goodies, fruit, coffee, and tea are served.

The First Baptist Church in Vineyard Haven will hold a Stone Wall Market Place on Saturday, July 20, from 10 am to 2 pm. Vendors or anyone interested in renting space should call the office at 508-693-1539 as soon as possible for information or to reserve space.

Rappers at Flatbread

On Saturday, June 29, Flatbread Company in Edgartown near the M.V. airport will host West Coast rappers Souls of Mischief. The four-man group, which is part of the rap collective Hieroglyphics, is touring this summer to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their popular debut album 93 ’til Infinity, which they will perform in full. The night will be opened by local artists Complex Humans.
