Renee Dasilva of Vineyard Haven topped the field of 100 runners on a misty, humid Sunday morning in the Vineyard Youth Tennis 5K run and walk. Mr. Dasilva won the race in 18:43, five seconds in front of runner-up Lawrence Czaplewski of West Caldwell, New Jersey. Proceeds from the event benefited the VYT Scholarship Fund.
The course took in a wooded route through the state forest, starting and finishing at the entrance to Vineyard Youth Tennis, located off of Barnes Road in Oak Bluffs, just south of the roundabout.
Jessie Rochefort of Vineyard Haven was the first woman to the tape, finishing ninth overall in 21:57. Megan McDonald of Edgartown was the women’s runner-up, placing 12th in 23:35.
Steve Eick of New York City was third overall in 19:14, followed by 4. Kevin Hanley, New Fairfield, Connecticut, 19:42; 5. Reann Steenkamp, V.H., 21:00; 6. Matt Funiciello, V.H., 21:27; 7. Nevin Wallis, V.H., 21:54; and 8. Steven Katz, West Tisbury, 21:56. Ten-year-old Jack Lionette of Chilmark rounded out the top 10 with a time of 22:05. Douglas Best of Vineyard Haven was 11th in 22:50.
