Happy Birthday, U.S.A.! Yes, we gripe and complain about you, sometimes with good reason, and there are times when you could do better, but I do not think there is another country that could give us the freedom and benefits we enjoy here.

Here is an art event that is also a fundraiser for our library. On Saturday, July 6, from 2 to 4 pm, there will an art opening with Michael Wooley. He will show photographs, sketches, and collages. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Library Friends of Oak Bluffs. The exhibit will be on display through July 12. Free admission and refreshments will be served

Want to meet some Sharks? On Thursday, July 11, at 11:30 am, the Oak Bluffs Library is sponsoring a Play Ball with the Sharks event. Come and meet the players. There will be a question and answer session, baseball clinic, autographs, and more. This event is for all ages and includes refreshments.

That’s right, “Mother Goose on the Loose” is alive and well. While the West Tisbury Library is in their temporary space, Nelia and Amy will be reading to children under the age of 3 at three locations on the Island: Tuesdays at 10:30 am at Martha’s Vineyard Community Services (through July 30); Thursdays, July 11, July 25, and August 8 at 10:30 am at the Oak Bluffs Library; and Thursdays, July 18, August 1, and August 15 at 10:30 am at the Vineyard Haven Library. Please note there will be no story time on Thursday, July 4.

Seastreak is sponsoring a special trip on Saturday, July 13. The cost is $45, which includes roundtrip ferry and coach bus transportation from Oak Bluffs to Foxwoods and back, as well as $15 gaming credit and a voucher for a free buffet. The high-speed ferry and the coach bus are both air-conditioned. The ferry departs the Oak Bluffs SSA terminal at 9:15 am. The bus will arrive at Foxwoods at 11:30 am and depart at 4:30 pm to make it back for the 6:30 ferry from New Bedford to Oak Bluffs. This gives participants five hours at Foxwoods. The return ferry will arrive at the O.B. SSA terminal at 7:30 pm.

The Ljuba Davis Ladino Ensemble will bring fresh, acoustic life to Sephardic songs on Monday July 22, at 8 pm at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center. Tickets $25, $20 for Film Society Members, online at mvfilmsociety.com or at the door.

Special events at the Y this summer include the Third Annual Stars and Stripes Festival on Saturday, July 6, at Flatbread Co. at the airport. Doors open at 7:30 pm. The Festival features Island favorite Dukes County Love Affair (DCLA). This is for ages 21 + and ID is required. There are also sponsorship opportunities which support the Stars and Stripes Strong Families Fund where 100 percent of the proceeds from your donations benefit”Y FOR ALL” financial Assistance to deserving families for vital Y membership and programs.

The Write Stuff poetry workshop will take place July 15–19, from 9 am to 1 pm at Alex’s Place, YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard. This a poetry workshop for teens aged 13 to 18 years old.

Keep in mind those 19 Arizona firefighters who lost their lives in wild fires on Sunday, and show your appreciation to our local firefighters for all they do and the possible dangers they might face.

We send belated Birthday smiles to James Maseda who celebrated on June 30. Smiles to James Cage on the 5th, Barbara Fehl and Pam Gibson on July 6, Erin Pacheco, and Donald Billings on the 7th, Claire Gibson and Nicholas Mathias on the 9th and Hope deBettencourt, Fronzie Conlin and Josh Correllus who share July 10th.
