Despicable Me 2 (PG)

An animated comedy about a father and small-time criminal who is recruited by the Anti-Villain League to help deal with a powerful new super criminal. Starring the voices of Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove, Russell Brand.

The Heat (R)

A funny comedy from the director of “Bridesmaids” about an uptight FBI special agent who is paired with a testy Boston cop in order to take down a ruthless drug lord. Neither woman has ever had a partner, or a friend for that matter. Melissa McCarthy is hilariously over the top as the cop. Also starring Sandra Bullock, Ben Falcone.

The Lone Ranger (PG-13)

Johnny Depp brings along all of his Deppishness as Tonto, the Native American warrior who transforms John Reid, a man of the law, into the Lone Ranger, a legend of justice. It is an action-fantasy in which the bad guys get their due. Also starring Armie Hammer, William Fichtner.

Monsters University (G)

A prequel to the animated Pixar flick “Monsters, Inc.” about not-so-scary monsters in school to learn how to be scary. Starring the voices of Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, and Helen Mirren.

This Is the End (R)

The apocalypse arrives during a celebrity-filled party at James Franco’s house. It may not be very pretty, but it is pretty funny in a kind of sick, fall-into-a-hole-filled-with-lava sort of way. The actors and entertainers play themselves, more or less. Starring James Franco, Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Emma Watson, Rihanna, and Seth Rogen, who also co-wrote and co-directed, and many many more.

White House Down (PG-13)

The White House is under siege in this action thriller from “Independence Day” director Roland Emmerich. While on a tour a Capitol policeman must act to save his child and protect the President from a group of paramilitary invaders. Starring Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx, and Maggie Gyllenhaal.
